Report on October Horse Camp 2010

  • In the October holidays 2010 we had a special Horse Camp, where we focused on horses for 4 full days. As well as extra riding lessons, we had guest speakers, demonstrations and ‘have a go’ sessions on natural horsemanship, we went on a trail ride, the campers learnt about horse keeping and how to prepare for a show and to wrap up the week, we had a show day. We are not sure the horses enjoyed all that washing and dressing up for the dressage…but the campers certainly did. See below some of the campers’ handiwork! We also had a picnic down by the creek and did some ‘normal’ camp activities to have a little break from horses.

  • Many thanks to the helpers who came specially that week to help in one way or another: Bud Glazbrook (the farrier), Kim Cooper (horse dentist) and Bec Jeyaseelan who was a guest riding instructor and helpers: Lauren Busch, Jed Marshall, Amy Kalme and Gemma Salvestro (ex staff who both came back for a day to help) and Margy Pillar who managed the fancy braiding amongst other things.

  • On the Friday, after spending the morning washing and making the horses beautiful, everyone had a turn (including the staff) at a dressage test during the afternoon. There were also some mounted games happening to keep everyone entertained and the horses behaved very well in unfamiliar circumstances.
  • That evening we had a ‘banquet’ dinner, a quiz night and a ribbons presentation. There were ribbons awarded up to fifth place in the three categories for dressage as well as an overall champion ribbon presented the camper with the highest dressage score. All the campers received a copy of their dressage test with judges remarks and a photo of them on their horse. A wonderful end to a great week of horses, horses, horses.
